Barthélemy. People come from all over the world
to shop in the islands so it is no wonder that the merchants doing
business here have the latest stock and the finest goods. But the
wonderful surprise is how friendly, warm and attentive these merchants
are. Many
visitors come away from shopping excursions on the islands impressed
not only with their purchases but the way they were treated. Shopping
venues include fashion boutiques, gift shops, art galleries
salons, specialty stores, food courts, sporting goods, souvenirs,
street fairs and fine jewelry. Sint Maarten
/ St. Martin / St. Barthélemy is a perfect
place for a weekend shopping expedition, from inexpensive knickknacks
and trinkets to chic clothing, electronics, beautiful home furnishings,
and exquisite jewelry. Everything you want to buy and more!
St.
Maarten, St. Martin & St. Barthélemy
all enjoy the unusual status as duty free ports, which makes the
shopping that much more enjoyable. No duty is paid on merchandise
brought in here, or taken out. Not only that, but the values are
among the world's best. Luxury items cost up to 50% less than in
other countries. So it is no wonder that shoppers from throughout
the world flock here to stock up on expensive goods. Jewelry is
probably the most purchased category, followed by electronics (and
probably will be the most popular by the end of the year!), perfume,
crystal and other luxury items.
Front Street
in Philipsburg is most of the St.
Maarten (Dutch side) shopping is concentrated. There
are boutiques stretching the entire length of the street in either
direction. Prices are usually quoted in US dollars, saving you the
hassles of figuring out the exchange rates. Front Street jewelers
offer everything from original creations in precious metals to loose
diamonds and emeralds. Another good buy is the leather goods with
such names as Lauren and Gucci. Some of the best bargains in world
for top French cosmetics and electronics can be found on Front Street
also.
You will find
some good examples of native arts and crafts here, from West Indian
hammocks, handcrafted jewelry, and wood carvings. Located along
Front Street you will also discover that the private galleries here
often highlight some of the finest art created by the artists of
the West Indies. The stores along Front Street usually open at 8
or 9 am and close from noon until 2 pm. They re-open at 2 and close
again at 6 pm. Stores are closed Christmas and Good Friday, but
you will find them open the remainder of the year. Because of the
casinos in St. Maarten and the late night winnings, some of the
establishments remain open much later. This is especially so in
the Maho Bay area. Some of the chic shops stay
open as late as the nightclubs.
On the French side, Marigot, the capital, is also
the retail center. The French side is also duty free.
St.
Barthélemy is also duty free port. Shoppers
visiting the island will be delighted with the range and number
of shops. Gustavia and St. Jean
are the retail centers of this island.
While visiting
the islands of Sint. Maarten / St.
Martin & St. Barthélemy, it would behoove
you to set aside several days, as there is so much available to
the shopper, that one afternoon would not do you justice.
One note about
duties: Each country has its own customs requirements on merchandise
brought back from duty-free vacations. The local erchants would
be more than happy to fill you in on these requirements. Now, get
ready to shop until you drop!
